Here you can find contacts for governing and regulating organisations. We've included a brief description of what these bodies do and where possible what their attitude is. Don't expect to see the same level of consumer protection that exists in the world of the high street. For one thing gambling and risk products are more complicated and blame gets diverted easily. Secondly, no one much cares in the government cirlces.

The Gambling Commission was set up under the Gambling Act 2005. It has taken over the role previously played by the Gaming Board for Great Britain in regulating casinos, bingo, gaming machines and lotteries. In addition, from 2007 it has the responsibility for the regulation of betting and remote gambling, as well as helping to protect children and vulnerable people. The Commission is also responsible for advising local and central government on issues related to gambling. The Commission is not responsible for regulating spread betting or the National Lottery which are the responsibility of the FInancial Services Authority and the National Lottery Commission, respectively.

The HBLB is a body constituted by the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963 to collect the levy on off-course horserace betting turnover from bookmakers and the Tote and to apply it for the statutory purposes namely :- a) the improvement of the breeds of horses b)the advancement of veterinary science c) the improvement of horseracing.

The Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS) acts as an impartial adjudicator on disputes that arise between betting/gambling operators and their customers after they have been through the operator's own internal dispute procedures and if a deadlock exists.

The IBAS Panel of betting experts apply their specialist knowledge to the facts and adjudicate by reference to the operator's own terms and conditions but do not rule on complex legal issues. As well as offering effective dispute resolution procedures, IBAS also check that operators have complied with the standards set by the Gambling Commission and with the IBAS terms and conditions of registration.

The Financial Conduct Authority is the conduct regulator for nearly 60,000 financial services firms and financial markets in the UK and the prudential supervisor for 49,000 firms, setting specific standards for 19,000 firms.

The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) is the prudential regulator of around 1,500 banks, building societies, credit unions, insurers and major investment firms. As a prudential regulator, it has a general objective to promote the safety and soundness of the firms it regulates.

The National Lottery Commission is a new non-departmental public body, which began on the 1 April 1999 to regulate the National Lottery, a task formerly carried out by the Office of the National Lottery (OFLOT).

The Commission undertakes the statutory duties set down in the National Lottery Act 1993, which previously lay with the Director General of the National Lottery. These are to ensure that the National Lottery is run with all due propriety and that the interests of participants are protected; and, subject to these two considerations, to maximise the amounts of money raised for the Good Causes

To uphold the continuing success of the National Lottery the Commission carries out a variety of tasks, among them:
  • Ensuring that Camelot complies with the terms of its licence to operate the National Lottery
  • Vetting individuals and companies associated with the National Lottery to ensure that they are "fit and proper"
  • Considering applications to promote lotteries and granting licences for individual lottery games
  • Ensuring that Camelot meets performance standards and operates in accordance with the codes of practice set by the Commission
  • Ensuring the security of Camelot's central computer systems and retailer terminal network
  • Ensuring that Camelot fulfils its obligations to the National Lottery Distribution Fund (NLDF), which distributes money to the Good Causes
  • Monitoring Camelot's customer service performance
The Commission will also be responsible for the appointment of an operator for when the current licence expires at the end of September 2001.

HORSE Poker is an exciting variation of poker and has grown in popularity for experts and beginners alike because it transcends the monotony of most poker games in that it switches to a new poker variation every time the dealer button makes a full rotation.

The British Horseracing Board is the Governing Authority for horseracing in Great Britain. Their responsibilities can be divided broadly into the following categories:
  • Strategic planning and policy for Racing
  • Improving Racing's financial position
  • Representing Racing in dealings with Government
  • The Fixture List Race Planning, including the supervision of race programmes and the employment of Handicappers
  • Central marketing and promotion of Racing
  • Nominating Racing's representatives on the Horserace Betting Levy Board
  • Liaison with the Betting Industry
  • Encouraging and fostering the breeding of bloodstock
  • Developing and maintaining programmes of training and education
  • The collection and control of funds required for the administration of Racing, including those required by the Jockey Club for the protection of the sport's integrity
  • The contract under which Weatherbys supply administrative services to Racing
 

  Greyhounds

The Board is the representative body for greyhound racing in the United Kingdom.
Effective and operational from 1st January 2009, the GBGB is a single, unified body that has taken on the functions of both the British Greyhound Racing Board and the National Greyhound Racing Club.
All rule changes, licence and registration fees must be discussed with the Board, which primarily exists to promote greyhound racing in this Country. The Board takes the lead in all political matters affecting greyhound racing as well as performing a practical role in areas as diverse as Information Technology, Training and Marketing
